What Does a Mouthguard Do?
A mouthguard is an important protective device that a person wears over his or her teeth. A properly fitted mouth
guard, or mouth protector, will protect the teeth and mouth from damage and absorb impact if a person suffers some kind of oral or dental trauma. The American Dental Association has suggested that over two dozen sporting activities can be potentially harmful to athletes. These include skiing, surfing, handball, football, basketball, equestrian sports, and more.
Why Should I Wear a Mouthguard?
Whether you’re playing basketball, baseball, football, or any other sport, there’s an inherent risk to your dental health. Any sport with the potential for physical contact has the possibility of causing you dental harm. However, if you wear a mouthguard, you’ll be able to greatly reduce the risk of chipping, cracking, or losing any of your teeth.
Even though a mouthguard may cost extra money, it can save money in the long run by preventing you from needing expensive restorative dentistry procedures to repair any broken teeth.
