Athletic Mouthguards

One of the best ways to lead a healthy lifestyle and maintain a great level of health is by playing sports. However, when a child begins to participate in recreational activities and organized sports, injuries can occur. That’s why the team here at Lone Star Pediatric Dental & Braces stresses the use of a mouthguard in any situation that may pose a risk of injury to your mouth.

What Does a Mouthguard Do?

A mouthguard is an important protective device that a person wears over his or her teeth. A properly fitted mouth guard, or mouth protector, will protect the teeth and mouth from damage and absorb impact if a person suffers some kind of oral or dental trauma. The American Dental Association has suggested that over two dozen sporting activities can be potentially harmful to athletes. These include skiing, surfing, handball, football, basketball, equestrian sports, and more.

Why Should I Wear a Mouthguard?

Whether you’re playing basketball, baseball, football, or any other sport, there’s an inherent risk to your dental health. Any sport with the potential for physical contact has the possibility of causing you dental harm. However, if you wear a mouthguard, you’ll be able to greatly reduce the risk of chipping, cracking, or losing any of your teeth. Even though a mouthguard may cost extra money, it can save money in the long run by preventing you from needing expensive restorative dentistry procedures to repair any broken teeth.

Types of Mouthguards

There are a few different options when it comes to choosing a mouthguard. These types of mouthguards include:

  • Off-the-Shelf – These mouthguards are found at most athletic stores. Off-the-shelf mouthguards typically come pre-molded in a standard small, medium, or large size. No extra work or preparation is required – just put it in your mouth and you’re good to go!
  • Boil-and Bite – These mouthguards are more customized than the off-the-shelf variety. You’ll first need to place this device into a pot of boiling water for a designated amount of time. After you’ve done so, put the guard in your mouth and then bite down hard for the specified amount of time. The heat will then soften the material in order to mold it to fit the shape of your teeth.
  • Custom – These may be the most expensive, but custom mouthguards will provide the best fit and most protection because they’re built for your very own mouth. A mold will be taken of your teeth for a custom mouthguard to be created.
