As a premier provider of pediatric dental care and orthodontic treatment throughout the greater Austin, TX area, we strive to make every visit to our office enjoyable for all involved. That said, there are a few things you can do at home to prepare your child for their visit, helping them achieve a healthier smile and have fun in the process!

Talk Through Everything

Talking with your child is one of the most powerful tools you have for making the dental care process easier, and that goes double for office visits. We always encourage parents to talk with their children about the dental and orthodontic treatment process, and in particular, we think it's a great idea to talk with children about their feelings surrounding office visits. By talking and listening to your child non-judgmentally, you can help identify and process any negative emotions like fear or anxiety about the dentist.

Ritualize Oral Health

For many children, the more unfamiliar something is, the scarier it is. That's why we always advise parents to make oral and dental health a regular part of daily life. Treat daily brushing and flossing like family bonding: turn it into a ritual you do with your child, and use it as an opportunity to explain the important benefits of long-term oral health. If the concept of oral and dental health is more familiar, your child will likely have minimized feelings of anxiety about office visits.

Stay Positive

Children watch their parents closely to understand what's going on and how they should feel, so the emotions you display have an important effect on your child's experience at the office. Even if you've been having a rough day, do your best to present a calm, upbeat, and positive emotional tone – your child will take the cue that everything is alright, helping to quell any anxiety or fear before it arises.
